In my former Blog Post Partial Table or Schema restore from mariabackup full backup we worked out the basics of a partial restore of a table into a MariaDB database instance.

An now we use this know-how to try the same procedure on a Galera Cluster.

Since version 2.1.0 the FromDual Recovery Manager (rman) for MariaDB and MySQL has also a progress indicator for the restore of logical backups made with mysqldump. This feature was implemented because of the numerous requests of FromDual rman users who were not happy with the default mysql behavior.

We recently run into some troubles with max_allowed_packet size problems during backups with the FromDual Backup/Recovery Manager and thus I investigated a bit more in the symptoms of such problems.

A general rule for max_allowed_packet size to avoid problems is: All clients and the server should have set the same value for max_allowed_packet size!

I prepared some data for the test which looked as follows:

mysql> SELECT id, LEFT(data, 30), LENGTH(data), ts FROM test; …

Some MySQL customers do not want to use the root user for mysqldump backups. For this user you have to grant the following minimal MySQL privileges:

mysqldump --single-transaction (InnoDB)

CREATE USER 'backup'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'secret';
GRANT SELECT, SHOW VIEW, RELOAD, REPLICATION CLIENT, EVENT, TRIGGER ON *.* TO 'backup'@'localhost';
